My Summer Vacation (Jr. High and High School Level)

Matthew's Summer Vacation

Jr. High Level 1

I stayed home for summer vacation.
I read books.
I surfed the Internet.
I wrote stories.
Summer vacation was interesting.

Jr. High Level 2

I stayed home during summer vacation.
I spent some time with my family.
I read books and did research on the Internet.
I also wrote part of a novel.
Summer vacation was too short.

High School Level 1

I did not go anywhere for summer vacation.
I didn't spend enough time with my family.
I read some books and did some research on the Internet.
I also worked on a novel that I am writing.
Summer vacation was interesting, but it was too short.

High School Level 2

I didn't take my family on any trips during summer vacation. I went many places on the Internet, instead. I read some books, too. I was doing research for a novel that I am writing.

I spent most of my summer vacation working on the novel. Maybe it will be interesting.

My children played video games, and I watched them sometimes. I wanted more time to spend with my family.

Summer vacation ended too soon.

High School Level 3

My family and I stayed home for summer vacation.

My wife has a part-time job, so she worked most of the summer.

I am writing a novel, so I did some research for it on the Internet. I also read some books to help me write. I spent most of the summer on the novel. I hope it will be interesting when I finish it.

I spent some time watching my children play video games and talking with them. I read a few books that I want my children to read, but they weren’t interested.

I needed more vacation time, to take my family somewhere.

One More High School Level

I went to a desert island with my friends during summer vacation. It was hot and it rained a lot.

We explored the island and swam in the ocean. We gathered fruit and vegetables, and caught fish for food. We ate fish and vegetables that we cooked ourselves.

At first, we stayed in a tent, but then we built a hut out of bamboo.

There were two lakes on the island. One was clear and pretty, but the other stank. We did not swim in the clear lake because we wanted to keep the water clean. And we decided not to swim in the lake that stank.

When we were bored, we played football on the beach.

I had fun with my friends on the desert island, in my imagination.

Things I Do a Lot (Jr. High Level Composition)

Collecting Manga (26):

I collect manga.
漫画を集めている。
I have more than one thousand manga.
千冊以上を持っている。
My favorite manga is Dragon Ball Zero.
お気に入りはドラゴンボールゼロ。
I read them every day.
毎日読む。
Reading manga is fun.
楽しい。

Reading Books (27):

I like to read books.
本を読むのが好き。
I want to read a lot of books, one hundred a year.
沢山の本、一年に百冊でも読みたい。
It is very important, and I have a good time.
読むのは大事で、楽しい。

Listening to Music (36):

I like to listen to music because I like music in my world.
自分の世界に音楽がらるのが好きなので、音楽を聴くのが好き。

I like to listen to J-Pop, K-Pop, and Rock.
ＪポップもKポップもロックも聴くのが好き好き。
I think old Japanese rock is cool.
日本の昔のロックも面白い。
I love the Blue Hearts.
ブル－ハーツが大好き。

Playing Basketball (27):

I have played basketball since I was thirteen years old.
バスケットボールは十三歳からやっています。
I belong to the basketball club at school.
学校のクラブに所属しています。
We practice five times a week.
一週間に５回ほど練習しています。
Basketball is fun.
楽しいです。

Playing the Piano (31):

I have practiced the piano for ten years.
ピアノは十年習っている。
At first I didn’t like the piano.
最初は面白くなかった。
But now I play the piano when I am sad.
今は、悲しいとき弾く。
It makes me feel better.
引くと気分良くなる。

Going to Juku (28):

I go to juku three days a week.
毎週三日の塾がある。
I study English and math.
英語と数学を勉強している。
My favorite thing about juku is the teacher.
大好きなのは先生。
She is very pretty. I like her.
きれいです。好きです。

Watching Funny Videos (25):

Watching funny videos is my hobby.
面白いビデオを見るのが趣味。
My favorite videos are videos of cats or dogs.
大好きなのはネコや犬の。
I like both dogs and cats.
ネコも犬も好き。
They are very cute.
かわいいだから。

Playing Video Games (33):

I like playing video games.
ビデオゲームやるのが好き。
I play them on my 3DS.
3DS でやる。
My favorite game is Super Smash Bros.
大好きなのは大乱闘マッシュブラザーズ。
Bros means brothers.
“Bros.”とは「ブラザーズ」、つまり「兄弟」の意味。
In Super Smash Bros., characters from other games fight each other.
大乱闘マッシュブラザーズでいろんなのゲームのキャラが格闘する。

Playing Basketball and Sleeping (32):

I belong to the basketball club.
バスケット部に所属している。
But I like to sleep more than I like to play basketball.
ただ、バスケットよりも寝るのが好き。
So I am always late to practice.
だから、練習によく遅れる。
The coach is always mad at me.
顧問によく怒られる。

Watching Soccer (23):

I like to watch sports.
スポーツを見るのが好きです。
My favorite sport is soccer.
大好きなスポーツはサッカーです。
I support Vissel Kobe.
ヴィッセル神戸を応援しています。
I am a fan of Iwanami.
岩波のファンです。
He plays defense.
ポジションはディフェンダーです。

Reading Manga and Playing Video Games (34):

My favorite things to do are reading manga and playing video games.
やるのが大好きなのは漫画を読むこととビデオゲームをやること。
It’s fun, but I need to study sometimes, too.
楽しいけど、時々勉強も必要。
I wish that I could study manga and video games at school.
学校で、漫画とビデオゲームを勉強できたらいいのに。

Travelling (26):

I like to travel with my family.
家族と旅行するのが好き。
Last summer, we went to the ocean and enjoyed swimming.
夏は海へ行って泳ぐのを楽しんできた。
After that, we had a barbeque on the beach.
その後、海岸でバーベキューをやった。

Running Track and Field (28):

I belong to the track and field club.
陸上部に所属している。
I run hurdles and long distance.
ハードルと長距離をやっている。
We practice every day after school.
毎日放課後練習している。
Sometimes I am tired after running ten kilometers.
たまに、十キロ走ってからはしんどい。

Playing Volleyball (30):

I belong to the volleyball club.
バレー部に祖属している。
I am tall, so I can spike the ball.
背があるからスパイクできる。
I like to practice setting and spiking.
セット、スパイクの練習が面白い。
I hope we win this week’s game.
今週の試合勝ちたい。

Watching Anime (29):

Watching anime is very exciting.
アニメを見るのがわくわく。
The characters are very cute.
キャラがとてもキュート。
And they are cool, too.
カッコいいだモン。
The songs are fun to listen to.
テーマ曲を聴くのも楽しい。
My Dad sometimes watches them with me.
父ちゃん、一緒に見るのもある。
